Scaling & Root Planing
and tartar build up, if left untreated, can cause the gums to pull away
from the teeth. “Gum pockets” form around the roots of the teeth and
food and bacteria can become trapped in them. This increases the risk
of gum disease.
Even if your teeth are problem free,
"loose gums" cannot hold them in place appropriately and you can
eventually lose those healthy teeth.
We all agree, a regular routine of
twice-daily tooth brushing and daily flossing is an important part of
regular plaque removal for everyone.
But if you have risk factors that have
caused a buildup of plaque on your teeth and gums to harden into tartar,
Altona Gate Dental may suggest scaling or root planing your teeth to
remove the buildup.
Not to be confused with ordinary dental
cleans, root planing removes plaque and infected tooth structure from
the root surfaces. Numbing of the area may be required for greater
comfort during the cleaning process.
The good news is root planing and
scaling, along with our support and instructions on good oral care at
home, can help stop the progression of gum disease and your gums will
heal and become firm and pink again.
