Altona Gate Dental TMJ and Occlusal Splint
Do you wake up in the morning with pain in the jaw muscles? Do you have trouble opening and closing your mouth, you feel a clicking or popping of the jaw, or your jaw feels like it get ” stuck”  for a moment? Do you find you constantly suffer from headaches or earaches?

You could be suffering from TMJ. Temporomandibular joint disorder, means that the hinge connecting the upper and lower jaw isn’t working properly. This hinge is one of the most complex joints in the body and it’s function is to move the lower jaw forward, backward and side-to-side. TMJ  prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones from working as it should.

TMJ disorders have many signs and symptoms. It’s often hard to know for sure if you have TMJ, because one or all of these symptoms can also be present for other problems.

Altona Gate Dental  can help make a proper diagnosis by taking a complete medical and dental history, conducting a clinical examination and taking appropriate X-rays.

Some of the most common TMJ symptoms include:
  Jaw pain
  Frequent headaches or earaches.
  Grinding of your teeth
Difficulty in opening and closing your mouth fully.
Neck soreness and discomfort or Facial pain.
  Sensitive and sore teeth
•  Neck and shoulder aches
  Ringing in the ears
Clicking or popping in the ear or joint
Worn teeth, (particularly at the front of the mouth

You may benefit from an Altona Gate Dental Occlusal Splint.
An occlusal splint  is used to prevent clenching or grinding. Clenching or grinding can cause damage to your teeth, chipping of your teeth, loose fillings and a loss of tooth enamel. Occlusal splints provides a cushion between your upper and lower teeth that helps to protect them from the harmful effects of grinding and clenching.

Dr Peter is a sufferer of TMJ and he found this splint benefited him extremely well. Other dental treatments for the condition can include replacing missing teeth, moving teeth, adjusting the bite and filling gaps between the teeth.

Altona Gate Dental can discuss with you your symptoms and possible solutions regarding TMJ.
